About Language Change (from Emel and Gulseren) # 4

Today, as media has influenced people’s lives in many aspects, it has also affected people’s speech. Now, we can hear some “celebrity-like” speech around us. Can you give any examples of this situation? To what extent does the media have an effect on people’s speech habits?

  1. Especially Tv series affect people's speech a lot. For example, after watching one of the most popular Tv series "How I Met Your Mother", I observed that people around me keep speaking like "Barney Stinson" character. When they like something, they say "It's legen... wait for it... dary! Legendary!" just like Barney does. For a Turkish example, I also observed many people saying "Oha falan oldum" when they are surprised. This phrase is made up in a Turkish Tv Series "Avrupa Yakası". Eventhough "Avrupa Yakası" is not being watched anymore, that phrase has its place in Turkish language already.

  2. I think most people started using "Bebişim" after "Avrupa Yakası", as most of us know, those people live in Nişantaşı and they speak differently. I also think that thanks to Hurley in "Lost", many people started using "Hey Dude".

  3. Nowadays, the TV series "Ezel" is popular and people, especially men, call each other as "yeğen" and it is quite funny that they are trying to be like "Ramiz Dayı":). They are trying to imitate him by telling philosophical sentences like him.
